From Wheels to Watts: Designing Smart Mobility-Energy Systems for Regional Sustainability

Track 3 - Mobility Systems

The transformation of mobility systems into active components of the energy transition is a critical lever for achieving climate neutrality in European regions. The Danube Indeet project, under the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme, proposes a replicable methodology and systemic framework for integrated mobility and energy planning — reimagining mobility infrastructure as a backbone for renewable energy distribution, storage, and balancing. At the core of Danube Indeet lies a multi-level workframe that aligns technological innovation, regional diversity, and policy-readiness. The project leverages renewable energy production and surplus to support the decarbonization of transport, pairing electric vehicle integration with Vehicle-to-Grid and Vehicle-to-Home technologies to stabilize grid loads and maximize renewable energy use. In parallel, green hydrogen is explored as a complementary energy vector, particularly for industrial use and heavy-duty transport. This contribution presents the methodological pillars of the project, including infrastructure and legal assessments, regional pilot testing, and a modelling approach for integrated energy-mobility scenarios. The framework emphasizes modularity and regional adaptability, with pilot cases across six Danube countries demonstrating the versatility of the approach. The Romanian pilot, led by URBASOFIA, explores local energy-mobility coupling strategies and governance gaps, generating transferable insights for medium-sized cities and peri-urban areas. By uniting the domains of transport and energy within a coherent planning logic, Danube Indeet supports policymakers, utilities, and urban planners in advancing smart, resilient, and sustainable mobility systems. The work presented contributes to the growing body of knowledge around mobility as a dynamic energy interface and a strategic enabler for regional climate goals.
